WASHINGTON -- Anthony Rendon homered to spark a three-run seventh inning, and pinch-hitter Nate McLouth came through with a tiebreaking sacrifice fly as the Washington Nationals rallied past the Houston Astros 6-5 Wednesday night for a two-game sweep. Byung-Ho Park Jersey . Washington extended its NL East lead to 1 1/2 games over Atlanta and Miami. The Nationals open a four-game series against the Braves on Thursday night in Washington. Rendon led off the seventh against Josh Zeid with his 10th home run, cutting the deficit to 5-4. Jayson Werth walked and went to third on Adam LaRoches single off Darin Downs (1-1). Kyle Farnsworth came on to face Ryan Zimmerman, who grounded into a fielders choice, beating the relay to first as Werth scored to tie it. Ian Desmond then doubled Zimmerman to third. After Danny Espinosa was intentionally walked, McLouths long fly to left field scored Zimmerman with the go-ahead run. Aaron Barrett (3-0) got one out for the win and Rafael Soriano earned his 15th save. Matt Dominguez drove in two runs for the Astros, who have lost three straight. Rendon, a Houston native, is 9 for 18 against the Astros with seven RBIs. For the second night in a row, neither starter made it past the fifth inning. Astros right-hander Scott Feldman left after five innings with a 4-2 lead. He gave up six hits and three walks while striking out five. Gio Gonzalez, activated Wednesday after missing 29 games due to left shoulder inflammation, pitched five innings, allowing four runs and five hits. He struck out six and walked three while throwing 93 pitches. Gonzalez has allowed 16 earned runs over 12 1-3 innings in his last three starts, including his last two before going on the disabled list. His ERA climbed to 4.94, the highest it has been in June or later since 2009. A replay review helped Washington take a 1-0 lead in the first. Denard Span walked and was called out attempting to steal second. Nationals manager Matt Williams challenged the call, and after a replay review it was overturned. Span then moved to third on an infield single by Rendon and scored on LaRoches sacrifice fly. In the third, Werth walked, stole second and scored on Desmonds single. With Houston trailing 2-0 in the fourth, five straight Astros reached safely. After a walk and a hit batter, Jon Singleton singled to load the bases. With the count 2-1, Dominguez lined Gonzalezs fastball to left field for a two-run single. Jason Castro followed with an RBI double and Jonathan Villar added a sacrifice fly to put Houston ahead 4-2. The Nationals cut the deficit to one when Spans two-out double in the sixth scored Espinosa. The Astros got it right back in the seventh. Robbie Grossman went from first to third on a single by Jose Altuve and scored on Ross Detwilers wild pitch. NOTES: The Nationals stole a season-high five bases, all in the first three innings. ... Basketball Writers Association. McDermott, who finished his career at Creighton as college basketballs fifth-leading scorer, accepted the honour from Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson at AT&T Stadium, site of the Final Four. The break is over for the Edmonton Oilers. Edmonton (9-23-9) should be well rested after last playing in Tuesdays 4-2 home loss to Detroit, but Friday night presents an even bigger task in the visiting Chicago Blackhawks The Oilers are 0-4-5 against the Central and are trying to join the rest of the NHL with a double-digit win total on the third date of a four-game homestand. Ten games into Todd Nelsons term as interim coach, the team is trying to evolve into a more aggressive forecheck. Thus far, the Oilers are 2-4-4 under Nelson, and while they continue to allow far too much on the back end (3.33 goals per game in that time), theyve seen at least some improvements offensively. Under Nelson, theyve averaged 2.40 goals per game after a 12-game stretch at 1.45. We tweaked our forecheck, both in the neutral zone and the offensive zone so its more aggressive than maybe what theyve played in the past, Nelson told the teams official website. If we do it effectively, it does create turnovers and we can attack on the rush or keep the puck alive in the offensive zone. Once again, the system only works if the guys have bought in and are playing hard and working hard with it. Thats something were striving for, but it is more aggressive. Ben Scrivens, who was rested Tuesday, started but did not finish the first game against Chicago after allowing five goals on 13 shots. Hes 0-2-0 with a 5.86 GAA against the Blackhawks. More recently, Scrivens has been strong with a 2-0-2 record and a 1.99 GAA in five games. After trading wins and losses for the last four games, another winning streak could be on the way for the Chicago Blackhawks. They head to Edmonton Friday nnight with hopes of extending a series winning streak to six games while denying the Oilers their first win against a Central Division opponent. Matt Belisle Jersey. The Blackhawks (27-12-2) tuned up for the trip north with Thursdays 4-2 win in Minnesota with a pair of goals from Bryan Bickell and a goal and two assists from Patrick Kane. Brad Richards added three assists. Theyve reached the halfway point in the season with some work to do in the Central, where they trail Nashville by two points. They finished the first half 14-1-0 when leading after one period and 14-0-0 when leading after two, and those numbers improved against the Wild because of Corey Crawford. Crawford made 42 saves in easily his best of eight games since returning from a lower-body injury. Prior to the injury, he was 12-5-1 with a 1.87 goals-against average. Since, hes 4-3-1 with a 2.98 GAA, so theres still work to do, but his value was recognized against the Wild. That was a goalie win, Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. They were the better team tonight, for sure, and we dodged a bullet. Crawford is 3-0-0 with a 1.59 GAA in his last four games against the Oilers. Chicagos five straight wins in the series have come by a 26-10 total, including a 7-1 win in Edmonton on Nov. 22 to begin the season series. Kane has nine points in those wins and 23 on a 13-game point streak in the series.
