SEATTLE -- Garrett Richards walked two batters in the first inning. He pitched out of a jam in the third with runners on second and third. He overcame errors and walks thanks to double plays and strikeouts. On a night the only offensive punch for the Los Angeles Angels came off the bat of Albert Pujols, it was Richards making sure those two runs stood up. Pujols homered for the second straight game while Richards and two relievers combined on one-hitter as the Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 2-0 on Wednesday night. "Just with experience I think the game has slowed down for me and so its basically just come down to me executing pitches," Richards said. Pujols hit a two-run homer in the third off Seattle starter Roenis Elias (0-1). Richards (2-0) threw seven shutout innings. Abraham Almonte was the only Seattle batter to reach via hit when he singled in the third inning. Richards walked three batters and the Angels committed two errors, but struck out six. "Confidence is high. And I think that when youre confident youre pretty comfortable youre going to make those pitches at the very least," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "I think thats the next step Garrett has taken. I think hes getting to know his stuff better." The pitching effort was needed after the Angels had been knocked around by Seattle, getting outscored 31-11 in losing the first four meetings against the Mariners. The pitching, combined with the 494th homer of Pujols career provided a bright spot after a miserable start to the day and the news that Josh Hamilton could miss two months with a thumb injury. Hamilton is likely to miss the next six to eight weeks after suffering an injury to his left thumb the night before sliding headfirst into first base. An MRI Wednesday revealed a complete tear of the thumbs ulnar collateral ligament. Hell be examined in Los Angeles on Friday to determine if hell need surgery. Pujols blast went 418-feet into the netting beyond the Angels bullpen in left field, and like the night before, Mike Trout was on base. Pujols is now six homers shy of becoming the 26th player in baseball history to reach 500 homers in his career. "Albert has very high expectations for what he needs to do," Scioscia said. "He takes it very seriously. He assumes the leadership role, he wants to be the cornerstone of the lineup and he takes that responsibility. Its good to see him do some of the things hes capable of and hopefully itll be there for a long time." Richards throwing a gem in Seattle should not have come as a surprise. The last time he started in Seattle last August, Richards threw 7 1-3 shutout innings. In 12 innings this season, Richards has given up one earned run and struck out 13. His only issue is walks and pitch count. He walked five in his season debut against Houston last week, lasting just five innings. His one jam came in the third when Almonte got Seattles only hit and Brad Miller reached on an error. Robinson Cano grounded out to first and Richards struck out Justin Smoak to end the inning. "When you run into a buzz saw like that where a guy is throwing 96-97, getting an 86-89 slider over for strikes, its going to be a tough night," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. "He just out-dueled our guy." Notes: Angels SS Erick Aybar was a late scratch from the lineup after getting some pre-game dental work. He was replaced by John McDonald. ... Injured Seattle started Taijuan Walker (shoulder) threw five shutout innings for Double-A Jackson in a rehab outing on Wednesday. Walker struck out 10. ... One of Seattles other injured starters, Hisashi Iwakuma, threw his first bullpen session on Wednesday as he continues to work back from a finger injury that kept him from throwing for most of spring training. Saquon Barkley Giants Jersey . There is no argument that the line of Pacioretty, David Desharnais and Thomas Vanek was one of the hottest in the NHL leading into the post-season, and they did combine for three goals and seven points, but it was the depth of all four lines that helped propel Montreal. Will Hernandez Giants Jersey . Vargas (8-3) allowed four singles and two walks while striking out five, allowing only two runners from a diluted Twins lineup to reach second base. Mike Moustakas and Jarrod Dyson hit RBI singles in the second inning against Kevin Correia (4-10), and that was all Vargas needed. http://www.nygiantsfanaticshop.com/Customized.html?cat=906. Duck Calling With several marquee centres available via trade and expected to be available via free agency, the Anaheim Ducks could be primed to be big players in the coming days.May 28 will mark the 25th anniversary of the final game the Blue Jays ever played at Exhibition Stadium and there really couldnt have been a more dramatic finish to that first chapter in Blue Jays history. There were 46,120 on hand to watch the Blue Jays play the Chicago White Sox, the same team they defeated on that snowy day in April of 1977 in the first Major League game ever played in Toronto. Things got a little dicey in the top of the eighth when Chicago scored three runs off Dave Stieb and Duane Ward to tie the score at five and ultimately send the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, with nobody out, George Bell slugged a game winning two-run homer off Bobby Thigpen that touched off a wild celebration and brought down the curtain on the Exhibition Stadium era of Blue Jays Baseball. Tom Henke got the victory with 1 1/3 innings of relief including three strikeouts and Kelly Gruber went 4-for-4 with an RBI. What many may forget is that after that victory, the Blue Jays record was only 20-28. Granted, they were 8-4 since Cito Gaston replaced the fired Jimy Williams, but the Jays still had a long way to come back to get into the playoff race. After that pulse pounding win to close the Ex, the Jays went on a six-game road swing through Cleveland and Boston. The Jays were swept at Cleveland to fall back to 20-31, just one loss shy of where they were at 12 under when Williams was cut loose. Then the season began to turn. They swept the Red Sox, including a wild 13-11, 12-inning victory in the finale. Ernie Whitt slugging a grand slam in the top of the ninth off Lee Smith as part of a five-run rally that put the Jays ahead 11-10, but Boston clawed back with a run off Henke in the bottom of the ninth that sent the game into extras. Then in the top of the 12th, Junior Felix belted what proved to be the game-winning two run shot off Dennis Lamp. Duane Ward getting the victory with three near-perfect innings of relief, including three strikeouts. That win came on Sunday, June 4, the day after the official gala opening Ceremony at SkyDome. The Blue Jays went right home to get ready for their first ever game at their new home on June 5 against Milwaukee. Unfortunately this one didnt have thhe happy ending for Blue Jays fans.dddddddddddd The Brewers won 5-3. The story though, was the magnificent, awe-inspiring structure that was SkyDome - complete with a fully retractable roof and the sellout crowd of 48,378 who paid more attention to the building than the game at times. Fred McGriff hit the first home run ever at SkyDome - a two-run shot off Don August in the second inning and Jimmy Key pitched the 1st complete game, giving up five runs on nine hits to fall to 6-4. The Jays didnt fair any better the second night. The bullpen combo of David Wells and Duane Ward gave up five runs over the final two innings to spoil an excellent seven-inning outing from starter Frank Wills. The Brewers winning again 6-4. Finally in the series finale, the Blue Jays finally christened SkyDome with a victory. The late John Cerutti went all the way on an 11-hitter, if you can believe it. In fact, he had a shutout going until Rob Deer touched him for a two-run homer in the top of the ninth. Cerutti closed it out though, and the Jays won 4-2. Cerutti didnt walk a single batter and struck out just one. I guess that defines pitching to contact! Two nights later, the Jays had their first shutout at SkyDome as Dave Stieb and David Wells combined on a 2-0 white wash of Detroit. So oddly in a building that would later be known as a home run haven, the Blue Jays had two complete games and a combined shutout in their first three games at their new home. The Blue Jays would go on to win their division, but ultimately lose the American League Championship to the powerhouse Oakland As - who went on to beat the Giants in the World Series. The point of all of this is that the Blue Jays have played all or parts (1989) of 25 seasons at the SkyDome/Rogers Centre. But June 5 of 2014 will be the official 25th anniversary of the first game ever played at SkyDome. One problem - the Blue Jays arent home on June 5. Theyre playing at Comerica Park in Detroit. But they will be home on the anniversary of the first victory on Saturday, June 7 against St. Louis. So let the planning begin. The years have just flown by and their have been so many incredible memories. Lets hope the Blue Jays do something special.
