(Photo by Dustin Bradford/Getty Images)Photo by Dustin Bradford/Getty ImagesAfter a relatively slow start as a rookie, Adam Gotsis has seen a considerable uptick in playing time as a 2-down defensive lineman in the 2nd and 3rd years of his career. This offseason he’s looking forward at a contract year while adjusting to his 3rd head coach, and 3rd defensive coordinator, in 4 seasons. But Gotsis is embracing the challenge and looking forward to growth and changes in a defense that had gotten a bit stagnant over time.“I’m loving it. We’re still basing out of the 3-4, pretty similar stuff to kind of last year, kind of the same techniques. Then we’re going to be playing a lot of subs, let us get a little more pass rush, a little more pass rush up inside, I think. I think it’s a good fit for a lot of us on the D-Line. I think we’re so versatile. You’ve got guys that can play all three positions, know both ends, and basically everyone in the room can play all of those positions. I’m feeling really comfortable. [Defensive Line Coach] Bill [Kollar] is coming back, and you know he’s one of the best D-Line coaches in the league. He’s on top of us, making sure we get it all down. Yeah, just loving it. Just loving the fit.”Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY SportsA large part of loving the fit is loving his new coach’s style. The offseason is barely halfway over and a common theme has emerged from interviews with a number of current and former Broncos- a theme that reflects rather badly on the level of discipline and intensity former head coach Vance Joseph brought to the job. Vic Fangio and his hard-nosed, no-nonsense style are looking to change that. Chalk Gotsis up as another player who approves.“Yeah, I like it. I like it. He understands right now in this phase we’re just in helmets. We’re not really in shoulder pads. It’s more guys just lending their time to techniques and a lot of that other stuff will come once we get the pads on. But just his mentality, you can really just get the vibe that it’s no playing around, no fun and games. We’re just out there. We’re here to work. We haven’t been in the playoffs in the last three years and we’re not trying to make that four. We’re trying to come in and do everything we can. So, guys are in the building. We’re locked in and we’re working hard.”Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY SportsOther Broncos have mentioned that coach Fangio won’t hesitate to call out a guy who’s not getting it done in practice, and Gotsis agrees that that certainly keeps his unit on their toes a bit more- especially considering Fangio’s defensive coaching background. One thing that should help prevent is the death by inches the Broncos have suffered for the past several seasons. When asked to point out why he thinks the Broncos have missed the playoffs in recent years, Gotsis pointed the conversation in the same direction.“I think we just need to be consistent. I think the last couple years we’ve started the season strong. We’ve been coming out with two, three wins and we’re looking really good. Then we kind of just fall into that lull of like three or four losses. Then we’re trying to gather ourselves again. So, we’ve got to come out and be consistent across all three phases: [special] teams, defense and offense. Hopefully, we can figure that out quick in this preseason and come to season time with us ready to go. There’s no looking back. It’s we win a game and Tom Jackson Jersey , ‘Who’s next?’ We can’t be thinking five weeks down the schedule, ‘We’ve got this guy,’ or, ‘We’ve got this guy.’ It’s every week is a championship week for us.” Horse TracksThe Bills and Jaguars are becoming the NFL’s silliest (and best) rivalsWhat’s your favorite Hail Mary in NFL history?Ask a former NFL player: Are teams really in ‘win now’ mode, or is it a myth? The point spreads that matter most in the 2019 NFL season, by weekWhy should anyone trust the NFL to define what a Hail Mary is?Chargers favored in 12 of first 15 games of the NFL seasonThe latest in the extortion case involving Tyrann MathieuNFL finalizing deal to play Preseason Week 3 Raiders-Packers game in WinnipegWatch: Drone footage of Raiders Las Vegas stadium under constructionAdam ‘Pacman’ Jones retiring after 12 seasonsGerald McCoy leaves Cleveland without contract2019 NFL season: One key homegrown player for each AFC teamRanking divisions by quarterback: AFC West, NFC West top listWhat is the one big takeaway from the Broncos loss to the Ravens? The Denver Broncos fell to 2-1 with their loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. It was a strange game to say the least. It all started so promisingly. Bradley Chubb got his first full sack, and the special teams blocked a punt that led to a Royce Freeman touchdown. Oh, it was gonna be a good day. On the ensuing kickoff, there was a ticky tack unnecessary roughness penalty and things got a little hectic from their. The short field led to a Ravens touchdown, but the offense responded. Just eight plays later Emmanuel Sanders was rushing the ball 35 yards on an end around. It was his first career rushing TD and all was right with the world. And then it wasn’t. As Ian St. Clair and I discussed on the MHR Radio Podcast, the Broncos looked awful in all phases. It was like the first quarter never really happened. After Justin Tucker blasted a 52-yard field goal through the rain, the score was 14-10 by the end of the quarter. Denver would hardly sniff the red zone the rest of the game. That old 2017 feeling reared its ugly head. By the time the second quarter rolled around, the Broncos looked more like a Trevor Siemian-led team than a one with a true quarterback. Case Keenum was just not good, and that is putting it mildly. Here is the big issue: In the first two weeks of the season Keenum struggled at times, but always found a way to make up for his mistakes. Not so much on the third go around. The big issue, as Ian mentioned in the podcast, was timing. His lone interception came late, as the Broncos were trying to get back in the game. In one of the rare occasions where Denver seemed to be in striking distance Keenum failed miserably. The pressure was in his face, and the offensive line wasn’t doing him any favors, but his decision to throw the ball while running backwards was the perfect example of all that is wrong with Keenum. The Broncos QB isn’t the only one to blame in this befuddling game. The coaching staff continues to confuse the fans with what seems to be poor game-planning skills. Vance Joseph seems to be no better today than he was a year ago. His clock management and decision making skills remind me of a drunk 17-year-old out past curfew. The No Fly Zone is now the Frequent Flyer Zone. There were so many penalties I thought someone was trying to make a yellow quilt. Phillip Lindsay was ejected for throwing a punch? Weird game. But the big takeaway from the Broncos Week Three loss to Baltimore has to be about Case Keenum. It is painfully obvious that he is not the savior at QB that John Elway, and all of Broncos Country, thought he would be. Is it an overreaction? Sure, but it’s pretty valid. And with the Kansas City Chiefs putting up points like Clark Griswold hangs Christmas lights, does anyone think Denver’s offense will be able to keep up on Monday Night Football? The MHR Radio Podcast is now on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, Stitcher and TuneIn.
