DT Lawrence Guy The New England Patriots currently have 89 players on their active roster. However http://www.newenglandpatriotsteamonline.com/tom-brady-jersey , only 53 of them will be able to survive the cutdowns on September 1 and ultimately make the team. Over the course of the offseason, we take a look at the players fighting for those spots to find out who has the best chances of helping the Patriots recapture the Vince Lombardi Trophy.Today, the series continues with one of New England’s defensive tackles.Name: Lawrence GuyPosition: Defensive tackleJersey number: 93Opening day age: 28Experience: 6Size: 6’4, 315 lbs.2017 review: After spending the first five years of his NFL career with four different teams, Lawrence Guy might just have found a permanent home during last year’s free agency: the former seventh-round draft pick signed a four-year, $20 million contract with New England to become a core member of the team’s defensive tackle rotation. He did just that in 2017 and played more snaps than any other of the Patriots’ players at the position.Overall, Guy appeared in all 16 of the team’s regular season games and played 582 of a possible 1,060 defensive snaps (54.9%). He saw his workload increase during the postseason, playing 137 of 216 snaps (62.0%) in New England’s three playoff contests. When on the field, Guy did not stand out in any particular aspect of playing the defensive tackle position. He was, however, a consistent contributor all year long. The veteran saw most of his action as an early-down, two-gap interior lineman that was used primarily as a run stopper but also as a part-time pass rusher. In that role, Guy registered a combined 72 tackles throughout the season – 64 of them coming against the run Womens David Andrews Jersey , including a team-high nine stuffed runs. He also notched 2.5 sacks as well as an additional three quarterback hits and seven hurries. While his numbers do not stand out compared to other defensive tackles across the league, Guy proved to be a valuable rotational piece along the Patriots’ interior defensive line – especially with Malcom Brown missing time due to an ankle injury, Alan Branch being phased out of the rotation, and rookie Adam Butler being primarily used as a sub-package pass rushing specialist. Guy, on the other hand, was as steady as they come.Besides playing defense, Guy also was regularly used in the kicking game as a rusher on field goal and extra point attempts. Overall, he played 199 snaps on special teams (of 540; 36.9%) and finished the season with a field goal block – coincidentally coming against one of his former teams, the now-Los Angeles Chargers.2018 preview: After a successful albeit at times unspectacular first year in New England, the Patriots opted to slightly alter Guy’s contract: they added a $500,000 renegotiation bonus to his deal after the defensive tackle narrowly missed out on a playing time incentive of the same value last year. The move reflects how the team views Guy and his role on the defense – and that he can be expected to be a regular contributor again in 2018.While the addition of Danny Shelton could potentially cut into his early-down playing time a bit, Guy will again see plenty of action as a de-facto starter along New England’s interior defensive line: he should be expected to be on the field for at least a half of the team’s snaps again as one of the top three at the position alongside Shelton and Malcom Brown. His role, however, might turn out to look a bit different.Playing mostly as a run defender in 2017 Authentic Lawrence Guy Jersey , New England might opt to give Guy more pass rushing snaps with Shelton and Brown both primary run defenders. It would therefore not be a surprise if he ultimately saw more playing time than last year, and registered more than the 12.5 quarterback pressures he had last year. A development like this one would certainly help a Patriots’ interior pass rush that was inconsistent last season.Week 3 Patriots vs Lions: 3 winners and 6 losers from New England’s 26-10 loss in Detroit For the second straight week, the New England Patriots played an uncharacteristically sloppy four quarters of football and therefore added another entry to their loss column. During their lackluster 26-10 defeat against the Detroit Lions, some disturbing trends and performances were on display: from an inability to stop the run to the wide receivers failing to get open. With that in mind, let’s take a look at yesterday’s winners and losers:Loser: QB Tom BradyTom Brady had one of the least productive games of his NFL career agains the Lions and finished the day with just 14 completions on 26 attempts for 133 yards, a touchdown and an interception. His statistical output is not the only concern, however: Brady was visibly frustrated all game long and also made a bad decision on a deep pass that was intercepted. Not the best day for the 41-year old.Loser: The run defenseBefore yesterday’s game, Detroit went almost five years without a 100-yard rusher. On Sunday night against the Patriots, Kerryon Johnson was able to become the first Lion since 2013 Reggie Bush to break the mark again – a reflection of the sieve that was New England’s run defense. The team’s run stuffers up front were dominated up front by the Lions’ blockers while the linebackers behind them were unable to consistently make plays downhill. This, in turn, allowed the home team to control the pace of the game and keep Tom Brady on the sidelines for all but 20 minutes.Winner: OT Marcus CannonAfter missing last week’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a calf injury, Marcus Cannon was back on the field against the Lions. While his return did not lead to a victory, it was a positive sign for the starting right tackle and New England’s offensive line as a whole after replacement LaAdrian Waddle had a tough time last week. Cannon proved to be a steady presence and played a key role as a blocker on a 19-yard screen pass to Rex Burkhead.Loser: RB Sony MichelThe rookie running back again showed some promise but proved to be mostly ineffective in his second NFL game: Michel finished the game with 14 carries for 50 yards and one catch for -1 but did not provide the spark New England’s offense would have needed. The lowlights of his night include him getting stopped behind the line of scrimmage on third-and-short twice, and failing to come up with relatively easy catches on back-to-back plays.Winner: DE Deatrich Wise Jr.Against the Jaguars last week Authentic Shaq Mason Jersey , the Patriots lacked urgency and showed little emotion. While it was more of the same yesterday, second-year defensive edge Deatrich Wise Jr. was not the reason why. Wise Jr., who stepped in for the injured Trey Flowers, was fired up coming out of halftime and tried to rally his teammates after positive plays. His energetic approach ultimately did not spread over on his teammates but it was still good to see him try.Loser: Josh McDanielsWith the issues at the wide receiver position and the Lions’ supposed struggles against the run, it was no surprise to see New England try to establish the ground game early. However, it quickly became clear that the plan did not work and that Detroit was ready for Sony Michel and company. McDaniels, however, continued to stick to the run – maybe even when he should have trusted Tom Brady to make plays.Loser: FS Duron HarmonNew England played plenty of two-deep safety looks with Duron Harmon lining up in his usual spot alongside Devin McCourty. But while he and the rest of the secondary were stout when it came to defending the deep pass, Harmon had a noticeable blunder in the third quarter that contributed to a 33-yard touchdown pass – one that shifted momentum again after the Patriots had finally established it: the veteran safety failed to pick up Marvin Jones who was open for the score to make the game 20-10.Winner: LB Ja’Whaun BentleyThe Patriots’ linebacker corps had a below-average performance on the night, but Bentley was again a positive surprise – one that delivered the defense’s biggest play: on the opening drive of the second half, the rookie was able to intercept Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford on a pass intended for tight end Luke Willson. Bentley provided close coverage and was able to get inside position to pick off the pass. A good play by an emerging defender.Loser: WR Phillip DorsettPhillip Dorsett was the Patriots’ leader in pass receptions entering yesterday’s game, but the Lions were able to erase him all four quarters: Dorsett was targeted five times by Tom Brady and failed to catch even a single pass against tight man coverage. While he had his moments in the first two weeks, yesterday was further confirmation that the former first-round draft pick was unable to replace Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola as the team’s go-to wideout.
